Laura Keen is an international development professional with more than seven years of experience implementing programs focused on alleviating poverty and inequality in Latin America and West Africa.
Ms. Keen is the program officer on the accountability and citizen engagement team at Results for Development (R4D) where she oversees the country work for Leveraging Transparency to Reduce Corruption, a research-action initiative that seeks to generate evidence about the open governance reforms capable of reducing corruption in natural resource value chains. She contributes to programmatic strategy development, manages relationships with country partners, and contributes research and analysis.
Before joining R4D, Ms. Keen worked at Refugee Rights Europe in London as an Open Society Foundation Fellow for Rights and Governance. In this position, she contributed to an initiative designed to improve the welfare of young people in the UK asylum system and conducted advocacy work at the United Nations and British Parliament.
Prior to pursuing her master’s degree, she oversaw Fair Trade USA’s global cocoa and sugar programs, aimed at providing additional investment and training to farmer organizations and large estates in Africa and Latin America. Her work focused on flattening power asymmetries between commodity buyers and farmers, helping to professionalize farmer associations, and improving working conditions for farm laborers. Previously, she worked in social enterprise in Peru, directing a pilot research initiative investigating supply chain autonomy and responsible sourcing as a preventative approach to human trafficking in the Amazon.
Ms. Keen is a fellow at the Pearson Center for the Study and Resolution of Global Conflict and a grantee of the Open Society Foundation’s Human Rights and Governance Program.
Ms. Keen holds a master’s of public policy from the University of Chicago and a BA in philosophy, political science, and economics from the University of Pennsylvania. She is a native speaker of English and also speaks Spanish and French.
