We worked with one community member who was identified by school representatives and given a brief training on how to lead the remedial class. We used literacy and numeracy workbooks available at the school to generate the lessons, and the “I do/We do/You do” approach for instruction. The community member would first model a literacy or numeracy exercise for the class, then ask the class to do one together with him, and finally assign each student their own versions of the exercise to try.

This individual needed some direction from R4D during the Wednesday lesson. However, after observing the principal give a lesson on Thursday (and having had a night to prepare with the text beforehand), he performed well during the Friday session which he also led. Both his confidence and fluency with the text improved, and he expressed enthusiasm about continuing to serve as a remedial class instructor.

This lean test indicated to us that communities are able to identify interested volunteers who can support struggling students by following a basic lesson plan with minimal training.
