On World Malaria Day, the Results for Development Institute (R4D) released a report that identifies strategies to improve the marketplace for long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs). The report is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and authored by R4D Managing Director Kanika Bahl and Program Officer Pooja Shaw.
The report identifies global approaches to drive purchasing of the most cost-effective LLINs while generating market incentives for improved net performance and innovation to address the growing threat of mosquito resistance. These strategies will allow the global community to save over $600 million and extend net access to roughly 300 million more individuals over the next five years.
“We are seeing troubling trends in the LLIN market, including major global funding gaps and mosquito resistance to current net insecticides detected across 27 African countries,” said Bahl. “Much more remains to be done to secure vital access to these products.”
