Results for Development (R4D) is hosting a new platform — alongside partners Spark Health Africa, Health Strategy and Delivery Foundation and the Center for Economic Research in Pakistan (CERP) — aimed at transforming the nutrition financing landscape and inspiring government leaders in 66 countries to elevate and prioritize nutrition financing.
The Finance Capacity Development Platform (FCDP) for Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) is designed to support SUN countries on their path to increase sustainable financing for nutrition and strategically use resources to maximize nutrition gains with the goal of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
FCDP will build on the experiences and lessons learned across SUN countries and partners such as the World Bank, USAID, the Gates Foundation, Capacity for Nutrition and others. A suite of tools and resources, co-developed with nutrition finance experts from across SUN countries, will help country government stakeholders develop their own sustainable nutrition financing frameworks.
As an ecosystem catalyst in the global development landscape, R4D will build a growing network of technical experts working in and facilitating learning across SUN countries, providing them access to tools, approaches and coaching.
FCDP’s vision of success is to support SUN countries in the global effort to transform nutrition financing with the following long-term goals:
- Greater sustainability of funding to ensure programs that offer important nutrition actions are uninterrupted and locally led
- Increased funding for nutrition that is aligned to country priorities across sectors and sources
- More strategic use of funding to ensure locally led policies and programs enhance the achievement of food and nutrition targets
“FCDP is a key resource available to countries through the SUN financing architecture which is well established and continues to be strengthened through country and regional engagement,” said R4D Nutrition Senior Program Director Albertha Nyaku. “Launch of the platform comes at a critical time where the demand from countries is very high for technical support to help them achieve sustainable nutrition financing goals at national and subnational levels.”
The FCDP comes online at a pivotal moment for nutrition funding. Donor funding for priority nutrition interventions has largely plateaued, according to a 2024 R4D report, and a Gates Foundation report recently revealed that climate change will intensify the child malnutrition crisis between now and 2050, with 40 million more children projected to experience stunted growth and 28 million more suffering from wasting.
“We are seeing exceptional progress made by countries to accelerate government commitment to nutrition, increase government investment to nutrition, and strengthen systems for financial management to ensure strategic use of existing funding across sectors. As a platform, we’re committed to expanding SUN’s technical toolbox and exchange knowledge on what works to boost nutrition investments,” FCDP Technical Director Mary D’Alimonte said.
