As the need for physical rehabilitation climbs in Ukraine, Results for Development is supporting policymakers to develop strategic health financing policies to expand access to quality and affordable rehab services.
The Challenge
Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has increased demand for rehabilitation services and underscored the need to strengthen the physical rehabilitation sector. The steep rise in conditions such as spinal cord injuries, amputations and complex limb trauma – combined with an already limited rehabilitation workforce and broad disruptions to delivery of health services – is impacting the ability of the Government of Ukraine to respond. The Ministry of Health is working to strengthen its stewardship role to effectively manage and coordinate financing for Ukraine’s rehabilitation sector and plan for the short and long-term rehabilitation needs of the Ukrainian population.
The Opportunity
Sustainable, quality, physical rehabilitation services will enable Ukrainians to optimize their functioning, fully integrate within society and participate in the economic recovery and growth of the country. The USAID-funded Rehabilitation for Ukraine (Rehab4U) project is working to create sustainable and fully integrated rehabilitation services within the Ukrainian health system across all levels of care. Rehab4U is led by Momentum Wheels for Humanity (MWH), with support from Results for Development (R4D), Deloitte, the National Assembly of People with Disabilities of Ukraine and Project Hope.
R4D’s Work
Under the Rehab4U project, Results for Development is supporting the Government of Ukraine in its initiative to strengthen financing and governance for rehabilitation services as part of ongoing efforts to improve the quality and efficiency of health services. This includes identifying opportunities in policy and programming to maximize the value of resources invested in the rehabilitation sector.
