Abyu Faris is an associate program director in Results for Development’s Market Shaping practice, with more than 20 years of experience in public health supply chain management across Africa. A pharmacist with a Master of Public Health, he specializes in market shaping, pharmaceutical supply chain systems strengthening, emergency supply chain design, project management, and policy and strategy development.
At Results for Development (R4D), Abyu leads technical assistance to the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Supply Service (EPSS), co-developing market assessment frameworks, guiding data analytics, and supporting national strategies to address market gaps and improve access to essential medicines. He works closely with government institutions and global partners to advance sustainable, data-driven solutions within public health systems.
He has led transformative pharmaceutical and supply chain reforms across Africa — developing Ethiopia’s first market shaping strategy, institutionalized market analytics within EPSS, optimizing EPSS procurement lists, expanding the pharmaceutical supply base, developed and rolled out national supply chain tools, SOPs and accredited training programs. He designed Liberia’s emergency supply chain framework to support outbreak preparedness and response, managed large-scale health commodity distribution and infrastructure improvements in South Sudan and Malawi.
Abyu previously held senior roles with Chemonics International, MSH and JSI, where he directed large-scale donor-funded programs for USAID, DFID, the Global Fund and the Gates Foundation. He has managed complex health initiatives in Ethiopia, Liberia, Sierra Leone, South Sudan and Malawi, collaborating with ministries of health, central medical stores, and international stakeholders. Experienced in leading diverse teams in challenging environments, Abyu is committed to strengthening national capabilities and advancing equitable access to lifesaving health commodities.
Abyu holds a master’s degree in public health from the University of Gondar and a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Addis Ababa University.
