Hawltu Alemu Birru is a finance and compliance expert with 14 years of experience working in finance, administration, compliance and grant management.
Hawltu is a finance and administration officer at Results for Development (R4D) where he provides support to R4D’s Ethiopia office as well as R4D’s finance, HR and operations teams in Washington, D.C. He prepares and reviews monthly staff payroll, monitoring the deduction of all taxes and pensions and timely payment to government offices. He also maintains and facilitates daily financial transactions reviewing and ensuring all transactions are in line with R4D’s financial policies and procedures. He performs monthly reconciliations, produces monthly financial reports and supports R4D’s daily administration and logistics activities in the country office.
Prior to joining R4D, Hawltu worked as partnership and incubation officer at Education Development Trust (EDT) TARGET project, as compliance officer for Fintrac Inc’s Feed the Future Ethiopia VCA project, finance officer at John Snow Inc, junior finance and admin officer at John Hopkins University and accountant and fund mobilization officer at the HIV AIDS prevention and control coordination office in Addis Ababa and other areas of Ethiopia. His achievements in these organizations included maintaining financial transactions, providing accurate reports to respective bodies, leading yearly statutory audit processes and supporting closeout teams to end projects smoothly based on the award terms and conditions.
Hawltu holds an MBA in financial management from Indira Gandhi National Open University and a BA in accounting from Jimma University. He is a native speaker of Amharic and also speaks English.
