Pili Mmbaga is a pharmacist and senior public health and market shaping specialist with over 13 years of experience in Tanzania’s health space, spanning health commodities supply chain management, health systems strengthening, market shaping and the sustainable introduction and scale-up of lifesaving health commodities.
As a senior program officer at Results for Development (R4D)’s Tanzania office, Ms. Mmbaga is part of the market shaping team, where she partners with governments, donors and development partners to strengthen health systems, improve commodity security and advance sustainable financing for essential health products. Her work includes scaling up access to essential maternal and child health (MNCH) products, supporting the development and operationalization of project work plans, producing qualitative and quantitative analytics and managing relationships with key partners across the public and private sectors, donor agencies and foundations.
She successfully led the introduction and scale-up of several maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) commodities, including amoxicillin dispersible tablets (Amox DT) in Tanzania, supporting the country’s transition from donor dependence to sustainable domestic financing. She is currently leading the development of a roadmap to introduce and scale up multiple micronutrient supplements (MMS) for pregnant women in Zanzibar.
In previous roles with JSI and USAID-funded projects, Ms. Mmbaga provided technical assistance to the Ministry of Health in Tanzania on supply chain management systems, supporting the innovation and implementation of systems including the Integrated Logistics System (ILS), ARV logistics, the TB logistics system and the electronic Logistics Management Information System (eLMIS). At the Ministry of Health in Tanzania, she coordinated supply chain activities and capacity-building efforts and supported initiatives to improve health commodity availability and strengthen the visibility and use of data for decision-making.
Ms. Mmbaga holds a master’s degree in pharmaceutical science from Zaporizhzhia State Medical University in Ukraine. She is a native Swahili speaker and speaks fluent English and Russian.
