The Africa Health Agenda International Conference 2019 (AHAIC) in Kigali, Rwanda was one of the largest health convenings in Africa, with over 1,500 people attending. It served as a platform to foster new ideas and home-grown solutions to the continent’s most pressing health challenges, with a focus on achieving universal health coverage (UHC) in Africa by 2030.
Results for Development was excited to attend AHAIC 2019, and participated in the following events and activities:
Pre-Conference
- During the Youth pre-Conference, Karen Louise Boothe presented an interactive learning module on how to message to your target audience in a relevant and salient way. More than 40 attendees identified their target youth audiences that they then drafted meaningful messages for with social media as their chosen communications tool.
Wednesday, March 6
- 8:30 – 10 am: Plenary 3, “Financing UHC in Africa”
- R4D Senior Fellow and SPARC Executive Director Nathaniel Otoo moderated the session, which explored successful strategies for domestic resource mobilization, partnerships that are sustaining and transforming the funding landscape in Africa, and new financing strategies that are paving the way for financial autonomy in Africa.
- 3:45 – 5:15 pm: Oral presentation, “Social accountability and the “unheard” voice of citizens: activating communities to demand for the right to health”
- R4D Senior Program Director Courtney Tolmie presented on when, where, and how social accountability improves health. Her presentation included evidence from a mixed-method multi-country impact evaluation.
- 3:45 – 5:15 pm: Partner-led side event, “Advancing Primary Health Care: African leadership and accountability on the road to UHC”
- Representatives from the Primary Health Care Performance Initiative (PHCPI) hosted a session on PHCPI’s Vital Signs Profiles and its One by One campaign with the goal of promoting the importance of data and high-level leadership for primary health care improvement.
Thursday, March 7
- 10:45 am – 12:15 pm: Partner-led side event, “#SPARCtheChange: Bridging the Resource Gap for UHC in Africa through Strategic Purchasing”
- R4D and Amref Health Africa officially launched SPARC, the Strategic Purchasing Africa Resource Center, which aims to promote a greater understanding of strategic purchasing and to help countries navigate technical and non-technical challenges (stakeholder engagement, communication, etc.) related to strategic purchasing.
